Device Security

Presentation

The device security menu is there to configure all security aspects of your end points.

Windows Accounts

The Windows Accounts menu is there to manage the windows account password of the devices.

  • Account: This is where you enter the account name for which you wish to change the password
  • Change password: select this option to change the session's password
  • Manual: select this option to change the passord for a defined password, then confirm the password.

  • The Mac address-based change password option is an alternative you can use to automatically generate a password which will be unique per device. In such case, you can insert the 2,4 or 6 last characters of the Mac address before or after the custom character string sequence of your choice.

Auto-Logon

The Auto-Logon option is used for setting the account on which the device logs automatically at boot. For this you need to enter the account's credentials:

  • Username: The username of the account
  • Password: The password of the account
  • Domain: Specify the name of the domain. if you do not specify a domain name, then the local account will be used

Write Filters Management

The Write filters are Microsoft windows embedded features that can be activated when the image is created.

Write filters are used to "lock down" the Windows image and protect it from any corruption. When using write filters any change that is made on the device (change kbd language, change a registry key etc..) any data that is writing on the system (cookies, temp files etc...) is directly sent into a ram drive and flushed as soon as the device is turned OFF. This feature is aimed at protecting the windows image but it introduces new challenges when it comes to managing devices with write filters active. proVconnect natively manages write filters.

There are 3 types of write filters:

  • EWF (Enhanced Write Filter) on windows XP embedded series of OS
  • FBWF (File Based Write Filter) on windows 7 embedded series of OS
  • UWF (Unified Write Filter) on Windows 10 IoT

Managing Write Filters means that before executing any command on the end point it is necessary to deactivate the write filter and reactivate it after the command has been excuted
